San Mauro Castelverde is a small mountain village in the Province of Palermo, set at about 1,000 metres above sea level in the Madonie area, east of the Pollina riverbed and between the Madonie and Nebrodi parks. Its territory links high inland landscapes with the Tyrrhenian coast, giving the village an unusual identity: a hilltop feudal centre with a distinctly coastal reach.
Its origins are uncertain, though the first settlement nucleus may date to the Byzantine period. Known in the Middle Ages as Santo Mauro and Castrum Sancti Mauri, it was part of the Norman world and later closely connected with the Ventimiglia family, who shaped its feudal history for centuries. The name Castelverde was added after the unification of Italy to distinguish it from other places with the same saint’s name.
Today, San Mauro Castelverde retains the character of a compact medieval village, with stone lanes, arches and a strong rural and religious memory. Its distinctive appeal lies in this rare combination of mountain altitude, coastal territory and a historic centre known for its sundials.
