Castelbuono

Castelbuono is a historic hill town in the Madonie area of the Province of Palermo, set in a valley at around 423 metres above sea level. It lies on the slopes of Colle Milocca, close to the Tyrrhenian coast and surrounded by oak, chestnut, cherry and ash woods, giving the town a mountain character without losing its connection to northern Sicily.

Its origins are tied to the earlier Byzantine hamlet of Ypsigro, a name interpreted as meaning a “fresh” or “cool” place at medium altitude. The area also preserves memories of Greek, Roman, Arab and Norman phases, before becoming a feud of the Counts of Geraci and then developing strongly under the Ventimiglia family.

In the early 14th century, Francesco Ventimiglia made Castelbuono an important centre of his county, and the town grew into a place associated with courtly, religious, cultural and artistic life. Today its identity rests on that layered past and its Madonie setting: a Sicilian borgo whose distinctiveness comes from the meeting of mountain landscape, Byzantine memory and Ventimiglia history.
