Giuliana is a historic hill town in the Province of Palermo, set 710 metres above sea level on a steep rocky crag above the Sosio valley. Surrounded by greenery and the natural landscapes around Monte Genuardo and Santa Maria del Bosco, it has the compact, elevated character of an inland Sicilian settlement whose position was both scenic and defensive.
Its identity reaches back to origins linked by sources to the Roman world: the old name, Juliana, is said to derive either from the gens Julia or from an owner named Julius. The town is documented in the Norman period, when in 1185 William II “the Good” granted the casale of Juliana and nearby lands to the church of Monreale, and it later grew in importance during the Swabian-Aragonese age.
Today Giuliana’s character is shaped by that layered past: medieval in its urban feel, rural in its surroundings, and strongly tied to local religious and agricultural traditions. What makes it distinctive is the combination of its naturally fortified hilltop setting, its Roman-linked name, and its long feudal memory in the heart of inland western Sicily.
