Galati Mamertino

Galati Mamertino is a medieval mountain village in the Province of Messina, set within the Nebrodi Mountains of northern Sicily. Its territory stretches through hazelnut and olive groves, beech and oak woods, valleys and rocky natural areas, giving the village a rural character closely tied to the surrounding landscape.

The present settlement has medieval and Arab-Norman roots, with local tradition linking its foundation to the Norman aristocratic Camuglia family. By 1320 it had become a feudal town under Blasco Lancia, and its old urban fabric still reflects a compact medieval structure, later marked by Renaissance defences.

Galati Mamertino is especially defined by its religious identity as the “village of the Three Saints”, a memory that continues to shape local tradition and community life. With a historic centre said to resemble an eagle with outstretched wings, it stands out as a Nebrodi village where mountain setting, feudal history and devotional culture remain closely connected.
