Ribera

Ribera is a town in the province of Agrigento, set on a broad plain made fertile by the Verdura, Magazzolo and Platani rivers. Its territory stretches from cultivated countryside toward the coast, giving the town an identity that is both inland and open to the wider landscape of river valleys and natural areas.

Its origins are tied to noble Sicily: Ribera was founded in the 17th century under the Moncada family, on the old feudal estate known as Piana di San Nicola. Its name recalls Maria Afan de Ribera, while the surrounding territory preserves memories that reach much further back, including prehistoric traces in the countryside.

Today, Ribera is best understood as a historic agricultural town with a strong local character, shaped by farming traditions, religious memory and the legacy of being the birthplace of Francesco Crispi. What makes it distinctive is the combination of a noble foundation, river-fed rural landscape and a civic identity deeply rooted in western Sicily.
