Realmonte

Realmonte is a small town on the Agrigento coast, set on a low hill or terrace close to the sea and surrounded by cultivated countryside. Vineyards, almond groves and olive groves frame its inland side, while the coast brings white marl cliffs, sandy bays and open headlands into the town’s everyday landscape.

Its historical identity is compact but distinctive. The settlement developed from a small nucleus around an early place of worship, and its original name, Monte Reale, preserves a memory linked in local accounts to the Monreale family, although the exact foundation details are not consistent. The surrounding area also carries traces of a Roman phase, while later coastal history reflects the need to defend this stretch of shore from pirate incursions.

Today Realmonte feels like a coastal hill town with agricultural roots and a growing relationship with tourism. Its character lies in the meeting of farmland, sea cliffs and layered historical memory, making it one of the Agrigento coast’s most recognisable small communities.
