Siculiana

Siculiana is a small borgo in the province of Agrigento, set between inland mountainous landscapes and the Mediterranean coast. Its character sits between rural and maritime Sicily: a compact historic centre above the sea, with old quarters, narrow lanes and a community identity closely linked to local memory, religious devotion and popular traditions.

Its historical identity is unusually layered. Human presence in the area is attested from antiquity, while the name is commonly linked to the Arabic *Suq-al-Jani*; another old form, *Kalat Sugul*, recalls the fortified Arab phase before the Norman period. The present settlement took shape in the Middle Ages, with Federico Chiaramonte associated with its development around 1310, and by about 1425 Siculiana was a barony of the Bonanno family, princes of Cattolica.

Rather than feeling like only a coastal village or an inland hill town, Siculiana combines both: sea-facing scenery, a mountainous hinterland, Arab and medieval memories, and a strong tradition-minded community. That overlap is what gives the village its distinctive Sicilian identity.
