Porto Empedocle is a seaside and port town in the Agrigento area, set on the coast where Girgenti, today’s Agrigento, historically reached the sea. Its identity is closely tied to the harbour: first a fishing and landing place, then a commercial outlet for grain and, later, sulphur, it developed around the practical rhythms of maritime trade and seafaring life.
The town was known over time as Marina di Girgenti and then Molo di Girgenti, gaining municipal autonomy in 1853 before adopting the name Porto Empedocle in 1863. Its role as the port of Girgenti was already significant in earlier Mediterranean trade, including during the Islamic period, when it was recorded as a vital coastal node.
Today Porto Empedocle retains a community-centred maritime character, with a cultural memory shaped by its old port function and by its links to major Sicilian literary figures such as Luigi Pirandello and Andrea Camilleri. What makes it distinctive is this blend of working harbour origins, layered name history and literary association on the coast of Agrigento.
