Scillato is a very small borgo in the Madonie, in the Palermo area, set at the foot of some of the range’s highest peaks. Mountains, springs and fertile land define its setting, giving the village a quiet rural character closely linked to water and traditional agriculture.
Its identity is unusually clear from the historical record. The area appears in Norman documents under the name **Xillatum**, and the first known reference dates to **1156**, when a mill was ceded by Countess Adelasia, niece of King Roger, to the Diocese of Cefalù. The present settlement is understood to have grown around this water-powered activity, with early houses developing near the working mills.
Today Scillato remains a compact historic village whose memory is tied to springs, cultivated land and the movement of water through the Madonie landscape. Its distinctive character lies in this continuity: a small mountain community shaped not by grand urban development, but by an exceptionally strong relationship between water, rural life and Norman-era milling history.
