Collesano

Collesano is a historic hill town in the lower Madonie, in the province of Palermo, set along the slope of a broad valley between two streams and beneath Poggio Grotta del Signore. Around 10 km from the Tyrrhenian coast and partly within the Madonie Park, it has a mountain-facing character rather than a seaside one: compact, traditional and closely tied to local customs, craft memory and the surrounding reliefs.

Its identity reaches back to an Islamic settlement phase and to the Norman period, when the area became a flourishing feudal centre between the coast, the Roccella river and the Madonie mountains. The town appears in medieval sources under names including Golisano and Qal’at assirat; in 1154 al-Idrisi described it as a fortress on a high hill. After the fortified centre was destroyed by order of Roger II, Collesano was later rebuilt on its present site, giving the village a layered identity rooted in defence, feudal power and mountain life. Today its distinctiveness lies in that combination of Madonie landscape, medieval memory and enduring local traditions.
