Mezzojuso

Mezzojuso is a small historic village in the Palermo area, set on the eastern slopes of Rocca Busambra amid wooded hills of oak, chestnut, elm and ash. Its inland setting gives it a rural, enclosed character, closely tied to the greenery around it and to the older street pattern of narrow lanes, alleys and courtyards.

The village’s identity is unusually layered. Its origins are linked to an Arab hamlet known as Manzil Yusuf or Menzil Jusuf, while its present cultural character was strongly shaped in the mid-15th century, when Albanian communities settled here after the Turkish advance in the Balkans. This Arbëreshë heritage remains one of Mezzojuso’s defining features.

What makes Mezzojuso distinctive is not only its setting, but the way its Albanian memory survives in everyday cultural and religious life. The coexistence of Latin and Greek-Byzantine rites gives the village an eastern note within inland Sicily, making it one of the Palermo area’s clearest expressions of Arbëreshë history and tradition.
