Valderice is a small municipality in the Trapani area, set on the eastern slopes of Monte San Giuliano at about 240 metres above sea level. Its territory stretches from green inland surroundings towards the coast, giving the village a character that is both rural and maritime, with sea views and the mountain landscape forming part of its everyday setting.
Although traces of Upper Palaeolithic presence have been found in nearby caves and shelters, Valderice itself has relatively recent village origins. It was once known as Paparella San Marco and was formerly a fraction of Erice, a link that still helps explain its position and historical identity. From the 19th century, the area also became associated with seasonal residences of the local upper middle class and nobility.
The village developed around religious life and fortified rural residences, while its coastal side preserves the memory of tuna-fishing traditions. This blend of hillside settlement, former Erice territory, rural architecture and maritime heritage gives Valderice a distinct place between mountain and sea in western Sicily.
