Buseto Palizzolo

Buseto Palizzolo is a small rural municipality in the Province of Trapani, set in the inland area between Erice and Segesta. Its landscape is one of cultivated hills and valleys, with vineyards, olive and almond groves, wheat fields and scattered rural houses giving the territory a dispersed, agricultural character.

The town’s identity reaches back to a Byzantine casale and to the ancient name Casale Busith, linked to the Arabic word “basita”, meaning land. In the medieval period the area was divided into casali and later became feudal territory; in 1603 the feud of Busiti took the name Buseto Palizzolo from the Palizzolo family, a Norman-origin family based in Erice.

Rather than forming a compact town, Buseto Palizzolo is spread across seven contrade, often described as an archipelago of small settlements among farmland and historic rural estates. Its quiet atmosphere, sparse traffic and strong memory of farming, pastoral life and craftsmanship make it distinctive as a place where inland western Sicily’s peasant landscape remains central to local identity.
