Erice

Erice is a medieval hilltop town near Trapani in western Sicily, perched on Mount Erice, long known as Mount San Giuliano and, in antiquity, as Monte Eryx. From its summit it dominates the island’s western edge, with wide views toward the Trapani salt pans, the Egadi archipelago and the coast of Marsala.

Its identity is unusually bound to myth as well as history. Ancient traditions connect the town with the Elymians, who settled and fortified the height, and with Eryx, a mythological figure linked to Aphrodite and killed by Hercules. The *Aeneid* also places Aeneas on the coast below, adding another layer to the town’s legendary memory.

Over time, Erice developed into a compact medieval borgo, enclosed by a fortified urban character and marked by narrow stone streets and a strong craft tradition. What makes it distinctive is the meeting of mountain landscape, medieval form and ancient sacred memory, including a summit presence once important to merchants and sailors crossing this part of the Mediterranean.
