Savoca is a small historic borgo in the Province of Messina, set in the Valle d’Agrò area above Sicily’s Ionian coast. Built on a rocky ridge in the southern Peloritani Mountains, between the Savoca stream and the Agrò riverbed, it sits about 303 metres above sea level and looks out towards the coast just a few kilometres away.
Its identity is closely tied to its hilltop position, quiet historic centre and long religious, cultural and aristocratic memory. Earlier occupation is associated with Roman Sicily, while Savoca developed strongly in the Norman period of the 12th century, when it became the main centre of the Valle d’Agrò and an important point on the Sicilian Ionian riviera.
Later phases, from Byzantine and Arab rule to Spanish Sicily and modern Italy, added to a layered local character without erasing the village’s compact mountain setting. Today Savoca is distinctive for the way its medieval and later heritage, coastal panoramas and well-known cinema associations meet in a small village above the Ionian Sea.
