Furci Siculo is a small seaside town in the province of Messina, set on Sicily’s Ionian coast between Taormina and Messina. It stretches mainly along the shoreline, in a narrow coastal position between the mouths of the Savoca and Pagliara streams, giving the town a compact, maritime character shaped by the sea.
Its history is closely tied to nearby Savoca: for centuries Furci Siculo belonged to that feudal and municipal world before gaining full autonomy in the early twentieth century, commonly dated to 1919. Earlier layers of settlement are associated with Sicani, Siculi, Phoenician and later Greek presence in the surrounding area, but the town’s modern identity is especially linked to its coastal life and fishing traditions.
Today, Furci Siculo is defined by its modest scale, clear Ionian setting and small historic centre, with a cultural memory that also includes the local artist Salvatore “Turi” Maccarrone. Its distinctive character lies in this combination of shoreline geography, maritime tradition and a long history of separation from Savoca into an independent coastal community.
