Vizzini

Vizzini is an ancient historic town in Sicily, spread across the slopes of two adjoining hills on the flanks of Monte Lauro. Its surrounding landscape brings together volcanic hills, rural countryside and traces of older agricultural life, giving the town a setting that feels closely tied to the inland character of the island.

Its identity reaches far back: the area was inhabited from prehistoric times, with early settlement linked to the Bronze Age, and the town was known in antiquity as Bidis. Later Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Arab phases were followed by a medieval period in which the settlement developed around a castle and became an important stronghold, at times connected with aristocratic families such as the Chiaramonte and the Alagona.

Today Vizzini is especially distinctive for its literary memory. As the birthplace of Giovanni Verga, it is closely associated with Italian verismo and with the people, settings and social world reflected in his writing. This combination of deep inland history, hillside landscape and Verga’s enduring presence gives Vizzini a character unlike a simple historic village.
