Joppolo Giancaxio

Joppolo Giancaxio is a small inland village in the Agrigento area of central-southern Sicily, set in the high valley of the Akragas. Its compact settlement lies at the foot of Rocca del Duca, surrounded by countryside and agricultural land, giving it the character of a rural borgo rather than a large historic town.

The present village was founded in 1696 by Calogero Gabriele Colonna, Duke of Cesarò, as a feudal settlement in the fiefs of Giancaxio and Ragalturco. Its identity is closely tied to this late-17th-century phase of inland Sicilian colonisation under noble patronage, and it later passed through changes of municipal status before regaining definitive autonomy in 1926.

The name itself carries layers of memory: Joppolo is linked in the sources to Rosalia Joppolo, while Giancaxio is said to preserve an older Arabic-derived place name connected with the idea of a “castle of Gianni.” Today, Joppolo Giancaxio stands out for the way its rural setting, feudal origin and local traditions remain concentrated in a small village landscape.
