Termini Imerese

Termini Imerese is a coastal town on Sicily’s northern shore, set between Monte San Calogero and the sea. Built in terraces on a promontory descending toward the coast, it has a layered urban character: an upper town historically tied to civic and religious authority, and a lower town shaped by commerce and the port.

Its identity reaches back to antiquity, with Greek connections, a later association with the Carthaginian foundation of Thermae in 407 BC, and an important Roman phase that encouraged urban development. Cicero’s description of it as *Civitas splendidissima* reflects the status it held in the ancient world.

Today, Termini Imerese is distinctive for the way its coastal setting, thermal tradition and ancient memory remain woven into the town’s structure. More than a simple seaside settlement, it is a place where mountain, harbour and historic terraces give physical form to a long Mediterranean past.
