Bolognetta is a small inland hill town in the province of Palermo, set about 300 metres above sea level in the Sicilian countryside. Its character is local and village-like, shaped by its hilly setting, rural surroundings and compact historic centre rather than by the pace of the coast or larger cities.
The town’s identity is closely linked to its origins as Santa Maria d’Ogliastro, a settlement whose history began around four centuries ago. After 1610, the feudal estate was acquired by Marco Mancino, a wealthy Genoese merchant, while the later name Bolognetta honours Vincenzo Bologna, the village’s first feudal lord and Marquis of Mineo. The official name change came in 1882, giving the town a clear connection between its feudal past and its present identity.
Today, Bolognetta remains a small Sicilian comune with a strong memory of village traditions, local culture and agricultural life. Its distinctiveness lies in this layered identity: a rural hill settlement whose name still preserves the story of the families and feudal history from which it grew.
