Aliminusa is a small inland village in the Province of Palermo, set at about 450 metres above sea level on the north-west slope of Montagna Soprana. Its position gives it a broad rural outlook, while its character remains simple and agricultural, closely tied to the surrounding hills and the rhythms of village life.
The name may preserve a distant Greek echo, possibly from “Lymenousa”, meaning marsh, a reference thought to relate to a nearby wetland. Its clearer historical identity is feudal: the village was purchased in 1625 by Baron Gregorio Bruno, who later gave it the name Sant’Anna, and it passed through the hands of several Sicilian noble families before becoming an autonomous municipality in 1812.
Today, Aliminusa is best understood as a quiet rural settlement with a strong memory of its baronial past, local craftsmanship and traditions connected to religious life. Its distinction lies in the combination of panoramic hill setting, agricultural identity and a layered name history that links a small Palermo village to both ancient linguistic traces and Sicily’s feudal age.
