Santo Stefano di Camastra

Santo Stefano di Camastra is a coastal town in the Province of Messina, set between the green hills of the Nebrodi area and the sea. Its identity is closely tied to majolica ceramics, which give colour to its streets, houses and squares and make craftsmanship part of the town’s everyday appearance.

The settlement has ancient roots and is associated with the earlier name Noma, with later phases linked to Norman-Swabian history and local ceramic traditions said to reach back to the Arab period. A defining moment came in 1682, when a landslide destroyed the older town and led to its reconstruction closer to the coast the following year, with a distinctive geometric layout.

Its present name dates from 1812, when it was changed from Santo Stefano di Mistretta in honour of Giuseppe Lanza Barresi, Duke of Camastra. Today, the town’s particular character comes from this combination of coastal setting, planned urban form and a ceramic culture that remains central to how Santo Stefano di Camastra is seen and remembered.
