Francavilla di Sicilia

Francavilla di Sicilia is a historic small town in the Province of Messina, set in the centre of the Alcantara Valley on the left bank of the Alcantara River. Framed by the Peloritani mountains and lying near the northern side of Mount Etna, it has a rural character shaped by waterways, hill slopes and an old upper settlement that still gives the town a medieval outline.

Its identity reaches well beyond the Middle Ages. Archaeological evidence points to Greek-era presence in the valley as early as the 4th–5th century BC, while the town’s later development is closely tied to the Norman period and to monastic and feudal power. The name Francavilla is linked to the idea of a “free town” or privileged land, reflecting a medieval status connected with tax exemptions and special rights.

In the 16th century, Jacopo Ruffo became a key figure in the formation of the old town centre, adding another layer to a place already marked by sacred memory, rural labour and community traditions. Today, Francavilla di Sicilia stands out as an Alcantara Valley town where Greek traces, Norman-medieval roots and agricultural culture meet in a compact mountain-and-river landscape.
