Tripi

Tripi is a small hill village in the province of Messina, set just over 450 metres above sea level in a landscape of countryside and coastal-influenced hills. Its quiet rural character is closely tied to agriculture, pastoral traditions and a compact historic centre, giving the village a strong sense of continuity with the land around it.

Its identity reaches back to the ancient Sicel and Greek city of Abacaenum, also known as Abakainon, on or near whose ruins the present settlement developed. The name Tripi may derive from the Greek “Trupi”, while later history links the area to feudal rule under various noble families. One important episode from the Greek period saw part of its territory taken by Dionysius I for the foundation of present-day Tindari.

Today, Tripi is distinctive for the way a small Messina hill community preserves the memory of an important ancient settlement within a rural Sicilian setting. Its character rests not on size, but on the close overlap between archaeology, old village life and the surrounding hills.
