Valguarnera Caropepe

Valguarnera Caropepe is a small inland hill town in the Province of Enna, set on the eastern side of the Erei Mountains above the Dittaino valley. Around it, cultivated fields, hills and rolling countryside give the town a distinctly rural Sicilian setting, with wide views over an interior landscape far from the island’s coastal routes.

Its identity is closely tied to the old feudal settlement of Caropipi, documented in 1246, and to the Valguarnera family, from whom the modern town takes part of its name. In 1549 Giovanni Valguarnera, Count of Assoro, received authorization from Emperor Charles V to establish the settlement in the feudo of Caropepe, giving the town its formal 16th-century foundation. The origin of “Caropepe” is less certain, with different interpretations surviving in local historical memory.

Today the town’s planned street pattern, rural surroundings and strong religious culture reflect that layered background: a place with prehistoric traces in its territory, a feudal core in its story, and a distinctive identity shaped by its position in the Sicilian interior.
