Sutera is a small medieval borgo in Sicily, gathered around the gypsum rock of Monte San Paolino and set in the valley of the Platani River. Its old streets climb around the mountain in narrow limestone lanes, giving the village a compact, elevated character tied closely to its rugged setting.
The name is said to come from the Greek *sotér*, meaning “saviour”, while local tradition links Sutera’s origins to the myth of Daedalus and King Cocalo. Beyond legend, the village carries traces of Arab, Byzantine and feudal Sicily, and in the Middle Ages it was known as a populated and industrious centre on an important route between Palermo and Agrigento.
In 1366 Sutera was granted by royal privilege to Count Giovanni III Chiaramonte of Caccamo, a reminder of its place within Sicily’s feudal history. Today its identity rests on the meeting of mountain landscape, medieval urban fabric, religious memory and the older Rabato quarter, making it distinctive among Sicily’s inland villages.
