Vittoria

Vittoria is a relatively young city in the Province of Ragusa, set on one of Sicily’s largest plains between the Ippari and Dirillo rivers. Its setting on the fertile land of Boscopiano gives it a strongly agricultural character, with vineyards surrounding a townscape that feels more ordered and modern than many older Sicilian centres.

Founded on 24 April 1607 by Countess Vittoria Colonna, from whom it takes its name, the city was created with a clear purpose of agricultural development and land reclamation. After the earthquake of 1693 it was rebuilt on the plain, reinforcing the regular grid of wide, straight streets that still helps define its urban identity.

Vittoria’s character is closely tied to viticulture and to the architectural growth that followed its economic rise. Between 1900 and 1940 it developed one of Sicily’s most notable concentrations of Liberty style, earning its reputation as the “Città del Liberty”. This combination of planned urban form, fertile landscape and early 20th-century elegance makes Vittoria distinctive among the towns of south-eastern Sicily.
