Mazzarrone is a small agricultural comune in the Province of Catania, set in a hilly area about 285 metres above sea level on the margins of the Iblei Mountains. Its character is rural and village-like, closely tied to cultivated land and especially to viticulture, which has helped define both its economy and local identity.

Unlike many older Sicilian towns, Mazzarrone is a relatively modern inhabited centre. It began to take shape mainly after the Unification of Italy, when changes to ecclesiastical property encouraged families from Iblean centres to settle in the area from around 1870. The territory also preserves the memory of earlier feudal landholding, marking its passage from estates to a settled agricultural community.

Even the name carries an uncertain layered history: some scholars connect Mazzarrone with a Greek root, while others suggest an Arabic origin meaning “happy”. The town became an autonomous municipality in 1976, separating from Caltagirone, and today its distinctiveness lies in this unusual combination of recent urban formation, older feudal traces and a landscape shaped by farming.
