Ucria

Ucria is a small mountain village in Sicily’s Nebrodi area, set on the left side of the Sinagra stream valley and surrounded by woods and wide natural scenery. Its character is rural and historic, closely tied to the mountain landscape that frames daily life in this part of the island.

The village has ancient roots, with a first settlement probably dating back to the Greeks. Its name is said to come from the Arabic *Kerya*, meaning “village”, a reminder of the Arab phase that forms part of its layered past. In the Middle Ages, Ucria’s position gave it strategic importance, and it later passed through Norman, Swabian, Angevin and Aragonese periods, as well as the hands of feudal families including the Perollo, Ventimiglia, Peralta and Marchetti.

Today, Ucria stands out less for size than for identity: a compact Nebrodi borgo where mountain scenery, Arabic memory and medieval strategic history remain central to its sense of place.
