San Teodoro is a small mountain comune in the province of Messina, set at about 1,150 metres above sea level on the slopes of Monte Abate. Inland and high in the Nebrodi area, it belongs to a landscape of woods, streams, rivers and cultivated countryside, with olive groves, citrus groves and vineyards around the village.
Its identity is closely tied to medieval and feudal Sicily. The name is said to derive from Theodore, a Roman soldier and martyr of the Diocletian persecution, while the settlement’s past is remembered as older than the Arab period. In 1303 Federico III d’Aragona granted the fief to Giordano Romano, and San Teodoro later passed through several feudal hands before becoming associated with the Brunaccini princes.
Today the village retains a small-scale, traditional character shaped by religious customs, agricultural and pastoral life, and the mountain rhythms of the Nebrodi. Its distinctive appeal lies in this combination of high-altitude setting, feudal memory and deep local continuity, with even prehistoric traces recorded in its surrounding territory.
