Troina is a historic hill town in the Province of Enna, set high on the southern slopes of the Nebrodi Mountains. Visible from afar, it rises amid woods, pastures and mountain landscapes, with wide views that take in Etna and stretch toward the Ionian Sea. Its old centre is known for an Arab-casbah character, where narrow winding lanes, steps, arches and underpasses reflect the layout of the ancient Arab town.
The area was inhabited from remote times by the Siculi and Sicani, and Troina later became an important military and communication point between eastern and western Sicily under several dominations. Its most defining historical phase came with the Normans, when Count Roger of Hauteville chose it as a stronghold during the conquest of the island. This combination of mountain position, Arab urban memory and Norman importance gives Troina a more complex identity than a typical inland borgo.
