Oliveri is a small seaside village on Sicily’s Messina coast, set on the Gulf of Patti just south of Capo Tindari. With Mount Tindari rising behind it and the sea opening toward the Aeolian Islands, it has the character of a borgo marinaro: coastal, compact and closely tied to the rhythms of fishing.
Its identity reaches back to the world of ancient Tyndaris, with local tradition linking the settlement to people who moved down to the coast after the ancient city’s decline. In the medieval period it appears under the names Liveri and Liberi, and between 1061 and 1195 the feudo di Liveri formed part of the Norman landscape of this stretch of northern Sicily.
What gives Oliveri its particular place on the coast is not only its setting below Tindari, but its long memory of the sea. Its tuna-fishing tradition was once among the most important in Sicily, leaving the village with a distinct maritime identity that still shapes how Oliveri is understood today.
