Montagnareale is a small borgo in the Province of Messina, set above the Gulf of Patti between the Nebrodi and Peloritani landscapes. Surrounded by hills, pinewoods, streams and countryside, it has the feel of a mountain village with a clear view toward the sea, shaped by agricultural and pastoral life rather than by the coast below.
For much of the Middle Ages, Montagnareale was tied to Patti and was known by names such as Casale della Montagna and Montagna Regia or Reale. Its autonomy came in the 17th century, traditionally linked to a payment made to the royal court of Philip IV of Spain; in 1649 it passed to Don Ascanio Anzalone, who held it with the title of duke.
Its past prosperity was rooted in farming, grazing, and once also in silk and linen production. What makes Montagnareale distinctive is this blend of elevated Gulf views, old rural memory and a name that still recalls its former identity as a “royal mountain” village.
