Gioiosa Marea

Gioiosa Marea is a seaside town in the Province of Messina, set on Sicily’s northeastern Tyrrhenian coast between the sea and the Nebrodi Mountains. Facing the Aeolian Islands, it has a distinctly coastal character, with a lively maritime identity and a landscape where open water, mountain backdrop and local traditions remain closely connected.

The town’s story is unusually tied to movement and rebuilding. Its roots reach back to the older hill settlement of Gioiosa Guardia, associated with the Norman period and traditionally linked to Count Ruggero d’Altavilla in 1062, with even earlier human presence attested in the area from the 5th century BC. After the devastating earthquake of 5 February 1783, the community chose to rebuild by the sea at Ciappe di Tono, and the old settlement was abandoned by 1813.

This coastal rebirth gives Gioiosa Marea its distinctive identity: not simply a seaside resort, but a town whose present-day life carries the memory of a vanished hill stronghold and a long fishing tradition overlooking the Aeolian horizon.
