Militello Rosmarino

Militello Rosmarino is a medieval hill village in Sicily’s Nebrodi area, near Sant’Agata di Militello, set on a ridge above the Rosmarino valley. Its landscape is part of its identity: vineyards, old olive groves, oak and beech woods, rocky gorges, Mediterranean scrub and small streams frame a compact historic settlement with a quiet, traditional character.

The village has deep roots, with traces of earlier settlement phases and Roman finds recorded in the area, but its present urban identity is closely tied to the medieval period. Its historical name, *Miletellum*, is sometimes interpreted as “little Mileto”, though the origin remains under study. The present centre is traditionally linked to Count Roger in 1081, and Militello later held importance under the Normans and Swabians as land directly dependent on the Crown.

Under Aragonese rule it became feudal land, and from 1573 to 1821 it was ruled by the Gallego family. Today, Militello Rosmarino is distinctive for the way its medieval memory, rural Nebrodi setting and strong local devotion remain closely woven into the life of the village.
