Letojanni

Letojanni is a small coastal town on Sicily’s Ionian shore, set in the Taormina tourist area near the centre of a wide bay between Capo Sant’Alessio and Capo Sant’Andrea. Once an ancient fishing village, it has grown into a lively seaside resort while keeping the scale and memory of a borgo marinaro closely tied to the sea.

Its earliest identity is not entirely clear, but sources associate the area with ancient Lethaios, a Siceliot settlement later linked to Roman rule. The present town took shape much later: around 1650, Francesco Reitano, Marquis of Gallidoro, established his residence here, helping a small coastal settlement develop beyond its fishing origins.

Letojanni’s character comes from this meeting of marina, noble presence and modern coastal life. Its connection with nearby Taormina places it firmly within eastern Sicily’s historic Ionian landscape, while its local memory is also marked by figures such as the surgeon Francesco Durante. What makes Letojanni distinctive is this layered identity: a former fishing community turned seaside town, rooted in a bay where ancient associations and later aristocratic development still define its sense of place.
