Serradifalco is a small inland town in the Province of Caltanissetta, set in hilly countryside between the Platani and Salso rivers on the northwestern slopes of Serra Cusatino. Its landscape and name are closely tied to Serra del Falcone, where local tradition says hawks once nested, giving the town a distinctive identity rooted in its surrounding terrain.
The town’s modern origins date to 1640, when Maria Ventimiglia Sarzana obtained the *licentia populandi*. Soon after, Baron Leonardo Lo Faso Pietrasanta encouraged settlement around a baronial residence, a church and the first houses, drawing people from Palermo, Caccamo and Termini. Over time, Serradifalco developed as both an agricultural centre and a mining community, with sulfur and potassium salt deposits shaping local memory.
Today, its character is defined by this combination of hill-town setting, mining heritage and strong religious traditions. More than a generic inland village, Serradifalco stands out as a place where a 17th-century foundation, a legend of hawks and the legacy of the mines still help explain its sense of identity.
