Castellammare del Golfo

Castellammare del Golfo is a coastal town in western Sicily, in the Gulf of Trapani area near Segesta. Set at the foot of Monte Inici and facing the gulf that bears its name, it has the character of a maritime borgo, with a landscape where the mountain drops toward a varied shore of sand, rock, caves and clear seabeds.

Its identity is closely tied to the sea and to its role as the ancient maritime port of Segesta. The settlement probably developed under Arab rule, then became a fortified coastal centre in the Aragonese period, when walls were built to defend this stretch of coast from pirate raids. The town later expanded especially between the 17th and 18th centuries, giving its historic centre a more ordered urban shape.

Today Castellammare del Golfo brings together a working marine memory, a lively seafront spirit and the quieter presence of the surrounding hills and coastline. Its distinctive appeal lies in this meeting of ancient port origins, fortified Sicilian history and a landscape where mountain and gulf define the town’s everyday character.
