Santa Lucia del Mela is a medieval hill town in the province of Messina, set in the Peloritani mountains on the slopes of Monte Melia. Its historic core lies along the declivity of Colle Makkarruna, between the Mela and Floripotamo streams, giving the town a compact mountain character shaped by stone, height and long views.
Its earliest origins are uncertain: the area is linked to ancient Sicani and Siculi presence, while another tradition connects its medieval foundation with the Byzantine period. After Arab rule, Roger I brought the settlement into his domains, and Santa Lucia del Mela later served as an important military outpost under successive powers.
