San Fratello

San Fratello is a small hill village in the Province of Messina, set in the Nebrodi Mountains and overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast. Lying between the Inganno and Furiano streams, it belongs to the wider landscape of the Nebrodi Park, where woods of oak, cork oak, Turkey oak, elm and beech frame the settlement and give it a distinctly mountain character despite its view toward the sea.

Its identity is unusually layered. San Fratello is often considered the heir to ancient Apollonia, a Greek city destroyed in the 3rd century BC by Agathocles, while the modern village is linked to an 11th-century Lombard colony established in the Norman period with Roger I. That origin still echoes in its Gallo-Italic dialect, a speech so distinctive that its people were historically known in Sicily as the “francisi”.

Today, San Fratello remains strongly marked by local language, religious memory and the culture of the Sanfratellano horse, making it one of the Nebrodi’s most individual communities rather than simply another mountain village.
