Itala

Itala is a historic village in the Province of Messina, set in eastern Sicily on the slopes of Monte Scuderi in the Peloritani range. Its territory moves between mountain countryside, valley areas with citrus groves and the coastal hamlet of Itala Marina, giving the village a character that is both inland and maritime.

The old centre is closely tied to the Norman period: it developed around a monastery founded by Roger the Norman in 1090, and its compact fabric still reflects that origin through narrow lanes, stairways, clustered houses and a Norman-influenced architectural character. Earlier layers are also part of its identity, with sources linking the area to ancient populations and to Greek, Byzantine, Arab and Norman phases.

There is even a cautious tradition connecting the name Itala to a 5th-century BC territory and to the ancient word for a young bull, though this is not presented consistently in all sources. What makes Itala distinctive is this blend of Peloritani landscape, coastal reach and a village identity rooted in one of Sicily’s defining medieval periods.
