Scaletta Zanclea

Scaletta Zanclea is a medieval borgo in the province of Messina, set on the Peloritani above the Ionian coast and close to the city of Messina. Its historic identity is tied to a compact hillside settlement that grew around a fortified nucleus, with the landscape rising from the coastal edge toward limestone heights and the older quarter of Scaletta Superiore.

The name itself reaches back to the Arab period: it is linked to the expression “âd dargat as sagjrah,” meaning a “small stair” or “small scale,” a detail that suits a place defined by ascent, slopes and layered terrain. The present medieval layout took shape around a stronghold traditionally connected with Frederick II of Swabia, who is credited with its construction around 1220.

Later, Scaletta Zanclea became part of the feudal history of the Messina area, associated with Sicilian noble families including the Ruffo line. Its character today rests on this mix of Arab toponymic memory, medieval form and feudal inheritance, making it distinctive as a small coastal-hill village whose identity is written into both its name and its setting.
