Basicò is a small historic village in the Province of Messina, set inland from Sicily’s Tyrrhenian coast in the Nebrodi area. It lies on the slopes of Monte Pito, about 520 metres above sea level, in a mountain landscape of hazelnut groves, chestnut trees and oaks, with wide views towards the Gulf of Milazzo and the Aeolian Islands.

Its identity is strongly tied to long settlement and medieval memory. The name is said to derive from the Greek *basilikòn*, meaning a royal temple or royal chapel, while the village itself developed around a monastic nucleus in the Middle Ages, though the exact chronology is uncertain. The surrounding territory also preserves traces from prehistoric and protohistoric periods, with later Roman-Byzantine and Norman-Swabian phases contributing to its historical depth.

Today Basicò has the character of a quiet, intimate borgo, orderly in layout and closely attached to local tradition. Its medieval lanes, aristocratic legacy and agricultural-pastoral culture give it a distinctive place among the inland villages of the Messina Nebrodi.
