Alcara Li Fusi is a small hill village in Sicily’s Nebrodi Mountains, set at about 398 metres above sea level in the historical Valle di Demena. Its setting is strongly mountain-based, with the village gathered on the slopes among rugged rock, wooded uplands and the wider Nebrodi landscape. The atmosphere is traditional and close-knit, shaped by religious devotion, folk memory and an old artisan culture rather than by large-town bustle.
Its identity reaches back through several layers of Sicilian history. The name is linked to the Arabic *Al-Qarah*, meaning “the quarter”, while the territory is documented in the Norman period: in 1082 Count Roger granted it to the diocese connected with Troina and Messina. Earlier origins are less certain, preserved in differing traditions that connect the settlement either with Greek legend or with communities displaced after Arab destruction.
Today, Alcara Li Fusi stands out as a Nebrodi borgo where medieval village form, mountain setting and deeply rooted local rites still define the character of the place.
