Marianopoli is a small inland hill town in the Province of Caltanissetta, set in the nisseno countryside at about 720 metres above sea level. Its compact centre has a clear 18th-century imprint, with an orderly layout of rectangular blocks that reflects the planned character of its later settlement. Around it, the landscape opens onto rural hills where much older traces of human presence point to a territory inhabited long before the modern town appeared.
The present-day settlement developed in the 18th century through the feudal colonisation of the Manchi fief under the Della Scala family, and later took the name Marianopoli. Its identity is also linked in local historical tradition to a Greek-Illyrian or Greek-Albanian colony, adding a distinctive layer to its Sicilian inland character.
Today Marianopoli remains closely tied to religious devotion, agricultural life and the memory of peasant traditions. What makes it stand apart is this unusual combination: a planned 18th-century rural town with roots in feudal colonisation, set in a landscape where prehistoric and ancient traces still shape its sense of place.
