Vita

Vita is a very small inland borgo in the province of Trapani, set between Monte Baronia and Monte San Giuseppe. Often described as the smallest village in the Trapani area, it has the compact scale and close community feel of an agricultural settlement, with everyday life still strongly tied to local customs, devotion and the surrounding rural landscape.

The present village began in 1607, when Baron Vito Sicomo of Calatafimi received the *jus populandi* from Philip III of Aragon and founded a new settlement around an older medieval farmhouse. Its feudal origin remains central to its identity, while its name is sometimes connected with that of its founder.

Vita’s modern character is also marked by the 1968 earthquake, which damaged much of the old centre and led to reconstruction beside the earlier settlement. This contrast between a 17th-century foundation village, traces of an older rural past and a rebuilt community gives Vita its distinctive place among the small inland towns of western Sicily.
