Petrosino is a young municipality in the province of Trapani, set in a broad rural and coastal territory that runs from the shoreline into the first inland areas. Its landscape is defined by vineyards, open agricultural land and the marshy Margi zones, giving the town a character that is both maritime and deeply tied to farming traditions.
Its origins are layered rather than neatly fixed: sources point to early rural and fishing settlements, Arab presence between the 10th and 11th centuries, and later Spanish-era development. Even the name carries uncertain echoes, sometimes linked to Saint Peter’s landing in the bay of Biscione, and sometimes to the Greek word for wild parsley once associated with the countryside. Petrosino’s modern identity took shape above all through viticulture, especially from the 18th century and through the influence of the Woodhouse family in the wine economy connected with nearby Marsala.
Today, Petrosino remains distinctive for the scale of its grape-growing culture, often described as Italy’s leading municipality for grape output per inhabitant, with vineyards stretching close to the sea.
