Priolo Gargallo

Priolo Gargallo is a small town in eastern Sicily, near Syracuse and the Gulf of Augusta, set northwest of the Monti Climiti. Its territory brings together coastal salt-pan landscapes, traces of older rural life and the unmistakable presence of one of Sicily’s major industrial areas, giving the town a character that is both historic and modern.

The present settlement was founded in the early 19th century by Tommaso Gargallo, after a royal licence to populate the area granted by Ferdinand III of Sicily. Yet the land around it has a much deeper memory: ancient names such as Trogulos and Thapsos link the area to prehistoric settlement, later touched by Greek, Roman, Norman and feudal phases.

This contrast defines Priolo Gargallo more than any single image: a relatively recent town built on a territory with very ancient roots, where coastal nature, industrial development and layered Sicilian history meet in a compact and distinctive setting.
