Pozzallo

Pozzallo is a coastal town in the Ragusa area of southern Sicily, facing the Mediterranean and the Channel of Sicily. It is the only maritime comune in this part of the island, with a seafaring character shaped by its port, broad sandy shoreline and the low inland slopes cultivated with olive groves and vineyards.

Although traces of human presence in the area reach back to the Bronze Age and the Castelluccio culture, Pozzallo’s identity became especially defined from the 14th century, when it grew in commercial importance through grain export and served as Modica’s outlet to the sea. Its later autonomy from Modica in 1829 marks another key step in its development as a town with its own maritime role.

Today Pozzallo remains closely tied to trade, fishing and sea routes, including its long connection with Malta. Its distinctiveness lies in this combination of southern Sicilian seaside setting and practical port identity: a town where coastal life, commerce and regional history meet directly on the water.
