Cinisi

Cinisi is a coastal town in the province of Palermo, set between the shoreline around Punta Raisi and a fertile inland landscape backed by mountains. Its territory brings together sea, cultivated land and slopes marked by ash, olive and carob trees, giving the town a character that is both maritime and agricultural.

Its identity reaches back to antiquity, when the area was valued for its position and fertility. The name Cinisi is said to derive from the Arabic *Cins*, while the form *Kinisia* is associated with the idea of a territory belonging to the Church. Arabs founded the first inhabited nucleus in the 9th century, before the Normans occupied the area and restored Christianity.

A later Benedictine presence shaped the town’s development, especially after a land concession in 1382, and helped define Cinisi’s religious and community traditions. Today, its character is also marked by the modern civil memory of Peppino Impastato, making Cinisi distinctive as a place where coastal Sicily, agricultural heritage and anti-mafia remembrance meet.
